Water Proof / Bear proof food containers for camping?
Any reccomendation for food containers that are waterproof or bear proof?
There are several popular bear resistant or bear proof canisters on the market today including the BearVault http://www.bearvault.com/bearvault_details.php
These canisters are tested and evaluated by the Sierra Interagency Black Bear Group http://www.sierrawildbear.gov/foodstorage/approvedcontainers.htm for use in certain areas of the High Sierra where black bears have become habituated to human food. In other areas they are not required, but many wilderness areas in CA recommend their use, as they are essentially 100% effective when used properly. They aren’t cheap but can be rented in areas where they are required.
The other option vs. black and grizzly bears and which is required almost everywhere there are bears is “bear bagging,” where you toss a rope over a limb and suspend your food and smelly items in a tree. In some areas it’s OK to tie off the rope to the tree trunk, while in most areas the only effective method is to counter-balance two bags hanging 10 feet above the ground. This is a very difficult method of protecting your food, one I never mastered, and why I only use a bear canister now-a-days. http://www.accesscom.com/~ddonehoo/editorial/bearbag.htm
